Eye Exams

Exam RoomIt’s important to us to offer the highest standard of care to our patients. We have a friendly and qualified staff to assist with your eye care needs. We offer a comprehensive examination that checks for potential diseases or disorders. A fundus camera is used to take a photograph of your retina. We use the GDX, a machine that screens for glaucoma, and can pick glaucoma up on average 5 years faster than any other glaucoma test. Appropriate treatment for your eyecare needs is given on an individual basis whether it’s lenses, medication, or vision therapy.

Optical Dispensing

With a variety of frames and lens options our dispensing team will help you choose something that suit your individual needs. Getting a new pair of glasses is an important decision and we will never rush you or force you into something you don’t want. They are also able to properly adjust your frame for a good comfortable fit. Should you need it we are able to do some repairs like replacing nose pads, replacing temple covers, tightening screws, putting in new screws, and restringing rimless frames. We also have a lab on the premises to cut lenses which means that we can have some glasses available to you the same day.

Disease Testing & Treatment

  • Glaucoma exists when the intraocular pressure is too high for continued normal function of the eye. High pressure can damage the optic nerve, causing an irreversible loss of vision. Glaucoma is called the silent thief of sight because there are no symptoms. It begins by taking your peripheral vision and can cause total blindness. If detected early intraocular pressure can be reduced to a normal or tolerable level by medication or surgery.

  • Cataracts are part of a normal aging process. As we age the lens of our eyes loss the ability to accommodate for near vision-requiring the use of reading glasses. The continuation of this aging process is cataracts. This is where the lens begins to lose transparency. This is a gradual process. When the cloudiness of vision is significant enough to interfere with your lifestyle the cataract can be surgically removed.

  • Diabetes is a chronic disease that inhibits the proper processing of carbohydrate(sugar) in the body. Diabetes can affect many body systems, including the eyes. This is known as diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy can lead to visual impairments that require treatment or may even result in blindness. Some diabetes related symptoms are double vision, visual fluctuations, and sudden loss of vision. It is important for people with diabetes to have a dilated exam yearly.

  • Age related macular degeneration is a degenerative disease affecting older people. Sensory cells of the macula degenerate with a loss of central vision. Studies show that vitamin supplements can reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration, but there is no good treatment once you develop it.

Laser Corrective Surgery Consultations and Referrals

Many patients are interested in lasik surgery for the correction of their vision. Dr. Toland can assist you in choosing the right surgeon for you, and then our office can schedule a consultation with that surgeon. At that consultation, it would then be determined whether or not a patient would be a good candidate for the procedure. Dr. Toland is a co-managing doctor which means he would assist in your pre and post operative care.
